Are you confused about litter for your cats? We have a large comparison for you!

Choosing the right cat litter and cat litter box can be crucial for your cat's comfort and for your household. We've put together an overview to help you decide. Remember, it's not just about the price of the litter - often more expensive options will prove to last longer and can be more economical.

Let's take a look at the different types of litter, their properties and what situations they are best suited for.

1. Non-clumping litter

This type of litter is usually made of different materials and can better neutralise odours compared to conventional sand. However, its use is limited. It is most often suitable for areas where daily maintenance is not required, such as the garage. However, frequent, complete replacement is necessary to keep the environment clean. For indoor cats, non-clumping litter is not very suitable as it requires more work and its durability is not ideal. It is particularly not suitable for households with a self-cleaning toilet.

2. Clumping bentonite litter

This is one of the most widely used and affordable options. It resembles small stones and is readily available in shops. Due to its ability to form clumps well, its maintenance is easy—just use a trowel to separate the used parts.

The advantage of bentonite bedding is its versatility; you can find it in a variety of coarsenesses and scents. However, the scented option can be too intense, which may not suit every cat or its owner. Scented litter is recommended for indoor litter boxes, while unscented litter will suffice for uncovered litter boxes.

Do you have an automatic litter box at home? Then bentonite is just the thing for you! Bentonite, tofu, or mixed litters are suitable for Catlink or Petkit toilets. But always choose a clumping litter.

3. Natural litters: wood, corn and tofu

This type of litter has many advantages: it is lightweight, environmentally friendly, and, in many cases, can be composted or flushed down the toilet. Their light weight makes them easy to handle.

Woody litters are great for cats with sensitive paws and also for measuring urine pH. However, the tiny pieces are easily carried around the apartment, which can be a problem for long-haired cats.
Tofu litters excel at quick clump formation and effective odor absorption. However, their durability gradually decreases, so more frequent complete replacement is necessary.
Corn litters are long-lasting and suitable for flushing. However, it pays to choose the brand carefully, as not all absorb odours well.

4. Silica gel (silicone) litter

These litters work on the principle of moisture absorption. The tiny grains soak up the urine, thus eliminating odour. Just stir the litter regularly with a scoop to distribute the moisture evenly. One fill usually lasts up to three weeks for one cat.

The advantage is excellent odor absorption and minimal daily maintenance—only solid excrement is removed. The disadvantage is the non-organic production and the risk that the litter will leave small marks on the floor, which can be unpleasant.
