"Water is both fuel and coolant for a dog. Without it, even a short walk can turn into a dangerous struggle for health."
The Biology of Dog Cooling
While humans sweat through their skin, dogs only have sweat glands on their paw pads. This is completely insufficient for cooling down a large organism. Their primary temperature regulation mechanism is through mucous membranes and the tongue. During panting, water evaporates, which removes heat from the blood.
Once a dog lacks access to water, their blood thickens, mucous membranes dry out, and thermoregulation fails. This leads to heat stroke, which can have fatal consequences in an incredibly short amount of time.
How much should a dog drink?
The general rule is that a dog should drink roughly 40–60 ml of water per 1 kg of body weight daily. During exercise, running, or in hot weather, this need can increase up to threefold.
Small dog (5 kg / 11 lbs): approx. 0.3 l / day
Medium dog (15 kg / 33 lbs): approx. 0.9 l / day
Large dog (35 kg / 77 lbs): approx. 2.1 l / day
Why you shouldn't rely on natural sources
Many owners believe a dog "will find something in the woods." However, drinking from puddles, ponds, or slow-moving streams is a health gamble:
☣️
Bacteria
Leptospirosis in puddles can cause kidney and liver failure.
🦠
Parasites
Organisms like Giardia cause severe diarrhea and dehydration.
🧪
Chemicals
Fertilizers and pesticides from fields often wash into nearby water sources.
🌿
Blue-green Algae
Toxins produced by algae in summer are highly poisonous to dogs.

Reedog Aqua 350 ml
Ideal for smaller breeds (Chihuahua, Yorkie, Pug) or short city walks.
Offer water before your dog is thirsty: Dogs often forget to drink when they are excited or playing. Stop every 20 minutes for a few sips.
Avoid ice-cold water: Even in extreme heat, ice-cold water can cause stomach cramps or shock. Lukewarm or slightly cool water is ideal.
Drink with them: When they see you drinking, they often want to drink too. With the Reedog bottle, you can dispense water directly into the built-in bowl.
Recycle unused water: Reedog bottles feature a unique system where you can suck unused water back into the reservoir by pressing a button, saving water when refills are scarce.
Watch out for hot asphalt: If the ground is burning their paws, their cooling needs double. Seek shade immediately in such cases.
